https://youtu.be/Vbg0afTB2TsThe incident involving match official Garry Powers provides an example of an unacceptable incident he subjected to and the impact it has had.
Football SA has undertaken a three year campaign to recruit and retain match officials to deal with the growth in participation numbers.
The game needs to address the dropout rate of match officials caused largely due to the abuse are subjected to.
Football SA CEO Michael Carter says:
“Games simply don’t happen without match officials and it is important we all respect that decisions are made on the spot. Not all decisions are right but that needs to be respected. Abuse at any level is not and should not be tolerated.
Match officials are there doing a very important job to ensure games can happen on a weekly basis.
This video message shows the impact abuse has on the individual and we are calling for the abuse of match officials to stop.
Football SA would like to thank Garry Powers for having the courage to speak to camera about his story."
